Ben sat with her during dinner and encouraged her to eat while they talked between bites. Ben connected with this resident and earned her trust.
Ben was assigned to a resident whom the staff described as "difficult, and a flight risk" because she was confused and constantly roaming into other residents' rooms. I told Ben that this resident's safety was a priority while we were there, and he took that job very seriously. Ben stayed with that resident the entire time we were at clinical. At first, the resident was a little irritated that this student was preventing her from going where she wanted to go, but by the end of the evening, they were best friends. Ben walked around the unit with her and learned a great deal about her as a person, not just as a patient. Ben even went to the kitchen and requested alternative dinner items because she didn't like what they had served her. Ben sat with her during dinner and encouraged her to eat while they talked between bites. Ben connected with this resident and earned her trust. His genuineness and caring towards this resident exemplify the importance of caring for the person as a whole and not just the physical ailments a person may have.
