We would be on the phone for anywhere from 15 minutes, to over an hour. She took time out of her days just to call me, a grieving mother when her job with me was otherwise fulfilled.
Almost one year ago, my life was changed forever. I found out my unborn baby had anencephaly, which is a diagnosis not compatible with life. My family's world was turned upside down as my husband and I had to make a horrific decision to terminate the pregnancy. Nurse Casey was there for everything from the diagnosis to after-surgery emotions and beyond. She sat next to me through all the appointments and meetings we had immediately following the diagnosis. After my surgery date, we would make "phone dates." During these phone dates, she would call me, and I could vent about anything and everything on my mind. Nurse Casey would talk me through the struggles I was facing and how to cope with them. We would be on the phone for anywhere from 15 minutes, to over an hour. She took time out of her days just to call me, a grieving mother when her job with me was otherwise fulfilled. Before we ended each phone date, we would schedule on the calendar for the next date. This went on for weeks until I felt I was able to cope on my own. During our last phone date, I told her I would contact her when I had my next positive pregnancy test. I waited until I was past the majority of milestones for a healthy pregnancy, and then I got to let her know of our news of expecting a little girl! I told her I would love it if she were able to come to meet our little girl after she was born. After her seeing me at my worst, she also gets to be there to see me at my best. I am so thankful for the compassion and empathy Nurse Casey gave us. She is a DAISY Nurse and so much more!
