Chelsie was able to make a connection with this adolescent and was able to collect the evidence from the exam while the patient felt safe and at ease with her.
Chelsie is a PFNE Nurse. Her compassion and ability to deal with stressful, difficult, and traumatic situations is admirable. Chelsie is an extraordinary example of a nurse who is kind, can make her patients feel at ease in the toughest of situations, and provides advocacy for the children and families she meets. Additionally, Chelsie is always on top of communicating, documenting her work, and consistently following up with the families she serves. There was a particular exam that she performed on an adolescent after a sexual assault. While the child asked for her caregiver to stay in the room, the caregiver was being difficult as she did not believe what the patient was reporting. During the exam, the caregiver looked away the entire time and provided no comfort or support for the child. Chelsie was able to make a connection with this adolescent and was able to collect the evidence from the exam while the patient felt safe and at ease with her. Chelsie communicated her concerns about the caregiver to investigators and CPS. Through her advocacy and the work of the case managers at the Child Advocacy Center, the child was able to receive the support and help she needed almost immediately. The ability that Chelsie has to connect with children, respect their boundaries (throughout the exam, if they want to stop), and support the caregivers comes naturally. I truly believe families sense that they are in a safe place with her even though they are seeing her for something traumatic. While child sexual abuse and assaults happen all the time, the aftermath once a disclosure has been made can be extremely stressful to the victims. It brings me great comfort knowing that there are nurses like Chelsie who will do everything in their power to ensure that the families feel safe and heard and that the child's wishes are always respected.
