Kimberly was orienting a new graduate while taking care of my son. Throughout the day, I was slowly seeing a decline in his condition. She was concerned, as much as I was. At shift change, she came in, mentioned she couldn't leave yet. Next thing I know, she brought the provider to my son's bedside, along with the new grad and oncoming nurse (first day off orientation). She professionally but firmly asked the provider, while touching his chest, "Do you see this? Do you feel this?". She then guided the provider to feel the increase in firmness to his right flank and chest area. She explained how he was drowsier. We are so thankful for her commitment to being a patient advocate, compassion, and for the care provided to my son and our family. Her courage to be direct with the provider, while orienting a new graduate, demonstrated to the new grad and oncoming new nurse how to be an advocate.
Kimberly's advocacy led to my son being transferred to PICU with a diagnosis of severe sepsis, organ dysfunction, myositis, cellulitis and SIRS. I am so thankful for her values. She demonstrated Carilion's mission!
