A patient had knee replacement surgery at THP. The patient and her family spoke highly of all the staff but Mary Wallum was the nurse that assured that THP would always be their hospital of choice. The patient and her family were thrilled with Mary Wallum’s compassionate care. She answered all their many questions with knowledge and patience. She took on any task asked of her with a smile. The patient and her family were thrilled every time Mary was going to be the nurse on duty. The patient had lower GI problems. Mary used critical thinking to give the necessary medication which relieved the patient’s distress. She also utilized aromatherapy to calm her patient and to make the room pleasant so visitors could be received without embarrassment.

The above example shows holistic nursing; Mary cares for the physical as well as the mental and emotional needs of the patient.

Later, the patient had to be hospitalized for a cardiac condition. She and her family were very disappointed that they could not have Mary as their nurse, since they were assigned to another floor. They would say that the other nurses were good but no one could compare to “our” Mary.
Mary deserves the DAISY Award for being a skilled professional. She practices compassionate nursing, which she has given to countless patients over her many years of service. A nurse that other nurse’s look up to, Mary Wallum RN.
