A CT was ordered for a patient who came into the ED exhibiting bizarre behavior. The procedure was canceled when the patient became aggressive toward staff, and consequently was placed on a hold. Nikki Bryant believed it was more than just a “normal psych episode”. She insisted that a CT be performed, but to no avail. However, her “bulldog tenacity” paid off the next day when she finally persuaded another doctor to order a CT, which revealed a large head bleed.
Her nominator truly believes “that if Nikki had not followed up on the patient and advocated for him, this patient’s life could have been permanently altered. Despite the patient’s unkempt condition, being under the influence and downright mean, she took the best care of him she could – a reflection of what a DAISY Nurse is all about! She looked past everything on the surface to the inside to see what was wrong and helped the patient feel better.”
