Patty has never forgotten where she came from, in terms of her being a nurse first in which she always places the patient's quality of care first.
Patty has served as a nurse and a Nurse leader for several years here at Bayshore Medical Center. As her peer, I have had the pleasure of working alongside her and have noticed her professional growth and development. Patty is a very hard-working individual who takes into account other people's needs before her own. No matter what task or project is placed in front of her, Patty always hits the ground running. Patty is self-assured and calmly handles the stress associated with being a leader with grace and composure. Patty truly embodies the role of an effective nurse leader. She is the first one to volunteer to help implement new measures as well as always reminding everyone of the importance of evidence-based research and practices.
Patty has never forgotten where she came from, in terms of her being a nurse first in which she always places the patient's quality of care first. Patty noticed that many of the patients on her units were not getting their basic needs met, as a result, she re-educated her team on the basic care needs of patients. This initiative was called “Back to Basics”, where providing basic ADLs and providing compassionate care is at the forefront.
A few of Mrs. Walker's attributes are that she is very attentive, passionate, and caring and is considered a change agent which is considered valuable within our organization. As a new leader and learning from her, I have watched her create an environment within her unit where her team members form a strong bond and trust her. She is compassionate and supportive in their decision-making processes and uses the shared governance model to ensure everyone's voice is heard. Patty always has her nurses' and her peers' backs and is always willing to pick up the pieces if we make a mistake.
Patty serves in so many different capacities within the organization and out. She helps encourage team members to participate in NICHE conferences, and different walks to help bring awareness about the different illnesses that people face. Patty is the first person to educate nurses on the care and management of oncology patients. Patty has been an extraordinary mentor not only to me but other leaders and team members. She is always willing to expand her knowledge of the ever-changing nursing profession.
