Tami built a relationship with the family in a short time that went a long way.
It wasn't even 6:45 PM but Tami was already starting her 7p-7a shift with a very upset family. We have all been there as nurses, but it's not fun. The husband/father of this patient had been moved from a room on the patient towers to ICU that day. The patient was very sick, but not actively dying. However, somehow the family had got the impression during talking with a physician that the patient was actively dying. Thus, the wife and their two adult children showed up at the hospital to see the patient. Unfortunately, with the current visitor policy due to COVID, only the wife was able to see the patient. When the wife showed up to the ICU, she was very upset. Not only because the kids couldn't see their father, but she was scared he was dying. She was concerned and questioned many things about the patient's care that day. Tami was downstairs talking with the adult children. She came up to the ICU before 6:45 to see what the patient's status was and figure out how we could help this shift. Tami took the time at the beginning of her shift to help the wife and patient FaceTime with their children. She also took the time to explain the patient's current condition. She built a relationship with the family in a short time that went a long way. In less than 20 minutes she provided emotional support and care to the family that communicated, "we care about your husband/father and we care about you". This provided a great foundation for me as a nurse to work off of as we continued to care for the patient and provide support to the family from a distance. Thank you Tami for going above and beyond to care for our families.
