Tyjay was floated to help out on the neuro unit when we had a nurse no show. He had already been floated twice that morning but came in with a great attitude and willing to help. We had a patient on the unit who had recently received a terminal diagnosis. The day TyJay floated to us also happened to be the patient's birthday. When we asked all the staff to come together to sing her happy birthday the patient was so excited but was adamant that we make her a hat. He spent 20 minutes making her the most creative, fun hat, even though he was already behind. He took the hat around the unit for everyone to sign. When we presented the patient with her new hat and birthday song she was smiling from ear to ear. No one wants to spend their birthday in the hospital, but she was touched by the celebration. It brightened her day despite the tragic news she received. She will never forget that moment and so much of it was credit to TyJay.
