We had a 7-year-old boy brought to the emergency department from his foster home with difficulty controlling his anger. The child needed to have a 1:1 registered nurse sitter to help him remain calm and contained in the room. Valerie is from the obstetrical department and was assigned to stay with the little boy the entire 12-hour shift in the emergency room. They played trucks, colored, talked, and stayed in the room until he fell asleep. The patience, kindness and compassion she showed this little boy was amazing. She was incredible when it came to his needs, his short attention span, and maintaining calmness with his anger issues. The emergency room nurses were so impressed with how Val handled and diffused the situation as the little boy never showed any anger, frustration or impatience with being in the strange environment. She made him feel welcome and safe, something this patient needed very much.
