We have experienced some tough losses this year on our unit and during those times we find strength and healing in each other.
Over the course of the last year, we have worked together through multiple changes both in leadership and patient populations. We started the year off with a new manager and both dayshift and night shift coordinators. Our team adjusted to the leadership changes with open arms and open dialogue to make the transition as easy as possible. In addition to the leadership changes, we have continued to take higher acuity patients with the goal of becoming a step-down unit. Each time a new patient population is introduced, our team goes above and beyond to make sure they fully understand how to take care of these patients to ensure that they are safe on our unit. We work very closely with the interdisciplinary team including respiratory therapy, doctors, case management, social work, and child life to ensure that both staff and the patient feel supported during their time on our unit. Through all the changes that we have experienced lately, we have maintained a culture where everyone feels welcome. If you were to stand at the nurses' station you would hear people consistently asking to help one another out, to make sure that everyone has the best day possible. We have experienced some tough losses this year on our unit and during those times we find strength and healing in each other. Our unit has great nurse retention, with nurses typically only leaving to grow themselves with an advanced degree or to travel nurse. We have 14 staff members with over 10 years of experience, and 50% of our staff have 5 years of experience which speaks to the environment and culture we have created on our unit. In addition to great nurse retention, we also have a very low rate of first year turn over. We make it a priority to welcome our new team members and to make sure that they feel supported as they transition into their new roles. Due to our hard work to maintain a positive environment, our staff feels empowered to go above and beyond what is expected of them while they are at work. Our unit has strong committees on the unit level where team members can come to have a say in practice changes and education needs. We also have representatives on many of the hospital-wide committees at Riley that our staff members regularly attend. In addition to staff involvement, we make patient care a priority on our unit. In quarter one of 2021, we were the most improved unit for patient experience scores and our year-to-date score went up by 10 points. This speaks to the amount of heart that our team members give to our patients on a daily basis. If you ask any member of our team what their favorite thing about working here is, they will likely tell you it’s the people we work with. We have made it a priority to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.
