Alex helped her un-hook her bi-pap, sat beside her bed, held her hand, and talked to her until she passed away allowing her to pass with dignity.
I wanted to give a huge shout-out to Alex Spivey. She displayed the utmost integrity and compassion that any person can give. One of our nurses in Surgical Services had COVID. She was in the ICU for a couple of weeks. Never intubated, but fought it daily. She was on Bi-pap. She timed out on the isolation for COVID, so her family had been visiting. On the day she died, she told Alex she was done fighting. She was tired of it and didn't want to do it anymore. She had made the decision to be DNR/DNI already. Alex helped her un-hook her bi-pap, sat beside her bed, held her hand, and talked to her until she passed away allowing her to pass with dignity. Her family was not there; Alex made sure she wasn't alone. We can only hope and pray that when our time comes; there will be an Alex Spivey there holding our hand, making sure we are not alone.
