When I arrived at the hospital, she was always there, smile on her face, reassuring me I would be alright.
I wish to nominate Alexis Romer, RN, BSN for the DAISY Award. I feel she is so deserving of the award, and it is my pleasure to offer reasons why I think she should be recognized for it. 2020, my world fell apart. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. When I first started my cancer journey, I felt numb, scared, and so lost. I decided to travel 5 hours from my home to Baptist MD Anderson for my surgery and care. That's when I met Alexis, Dr. "A's" nurse, in the Radiation Oncology department. She is truly special. Being so scared and nervous, she was always courteous, helpful, and showed such compassionate care toward me. As I sat in tears, she always made me feel comfortable. She is very positive and has extremely high ethical standards. I see she is highly respected and is an exemplary role model to others. When I started my radiation mapping plan, I did not know what to expect. I remember tears running down my face, lying on the table, wondering about my future outcome. After I was finished, in walks Alexis with a big smile. She came to check on me. I did not expect to see anybody, but Alexis was there to make sure everything was ok with me. On my first day of radiation, I sat by myself in the dressing room, was so nervous, crying to myself, and kept staring at my watch, wanting it just to be over. Then, Alexis walks in to see how I am. I can't tell you enough how much it meant to me to have this support system from her. She has the biggest caring heart of any nurse I've ever met. I traveled for 4 weeks, back and forth, for my treatments. When I arrived at the hospital, she was always there, smile on her face, reassuring me I would be alright. She's that hug everybody needs when they are down. On my last day of radiation, my daughter was with me to ring the bell. Alexis was right there by our side. My diagnosis had been hard on her, and Alexis made her feel good. My daughter and I will always remember the kindness she showed us. There have been many phone calls to her when I was not feeling good, and recently a new development. I had to have testing done, and I was scared of the outcome. She talked with me, listened to me as I cried, stayed calm, and gave me encouraging words. She called me a few days after my testing just to see how I was doing. She is just so special, the whole package of what a nurse should be. An all-around caregiver with a heart of gold. I consider her part of my family, and I can't thank her enough for all she has done for me. I have nicknamed Alexis "DAISY" because I feel she is worthy of such an award name. If I could plant her a field of daisies to represent her, I would, but I think a nomination for this award would be so telling of the wonderful, special nurse that she is. Anybody who knows Alexis, would agree with me that she is the most beautiful "DAISY." Thank you for taking the time to read my nomination letter and considering Alexis Romer for the DAISY Award. She truly represents Baptist MD Anderson and the Radiation Oncology department with grace and dignity.
