I was taking care of a patient today who was a DNR. Initially, this patient did not appear to be declining but became progressively worse as the morning continued. The moment came when I determined I needed to notify the family, so I went to the nurse's station and called the family; one by one until someone answered. Amanda Starnes, RN was sitting next to me as I made the phone calls and she asked if I was calling about the patient in room X, because she had previously taken care of him. I informed her it was this same patient. Amanda realized there was no family in the room and she said, "We should go sit with him". So, that's what we did. We both sat on either side of the patient until the sisters came to the patient's room. Amanda does things like this all the time and never gets recognized for them. Not only did she sit with the patient, but she assisted in the proper presentation of the body for viewing after the patient passed.
