During the unfortunate weather-related events caused by Hurricane Matthew, Amber cared for a patient that had fled their home due to flooding. This patient had experienced a cardiac arrest in the field and was revived by the Moore Co. Sheriff department deputies with the quick and competent use of an AED. The patient was then admitted to our unit. On the day of admission, Amber was taking care of the patient and his family after his visit to the cardiac cath lab. After talking with the patient and his family she quickly discovered they had been living out of their van for several days following the flooding and awful subsequent events from the hurricane. The patient's home was in the community that was requiring mandatory evacuation and they were not allowed to return to their property. Amber was immediately touched and took action to secure the patient's Wife, their pregnant Daughter, Son-in-Law and two young Grandchildren a place to stay at the Clara McClain house. Amber explained the situation to the people at the McClain house and had the fee waived for them. The patient was relieved and his family was so pleased and appreciative of everything she did for them. Amber then made sure they had food during the day while they were visiting with their loved one. Amber took the time out of her busy day, to make this family priority and took a huge burden off them during a trying time of family crisis. The patient's daughter expressed great thanks.
Amber is an awesome co-worker, she is a charge nurse, preceptor, and mentor for nurses on our unit.

I am a volunteer at Reid Heart Center. I received a direct call from a nurse on the 4th floor named Amber. She asked if we had a couple of wheelchairs and if so could I discharge the patient while she accompanied me with the patient's spouse, as both were in no shape to leave on their own. Amber did not have to do this. She could have simply called the discharge into teletracking or requested that Transport handle this. She and I wheeled both the patient and spouse to their car and made sure they were safely inside before they drove off. We agreed that they probably shouldn't be driving or living alone be they would never have allowed anything different. Amber was especially kind and compassionate with the elderly couple.
Amber is a special treasure to First Health and the Reid Center.
