My co-worker, Amber, is an extraordinary nurse who is always looking for ways to improve a patient's day and make them smile. My patient had just received very disappointing news; not only was it his birthday, but it was also Christmas Eve and he just learned he needed to spend the next few days in the hospital before transferring to rehab. On top of that, he had a tracheostomy which made communication more difficult. When Amber heard it was his birthday, she jumped into action! At a nearby store, she purchased festive balloons, party decorations, and then gathered the team to sing "Happy Birthday". My patient cried tears of joy, he was so very happy to be celebrated! Amber didn't stop there; she brought my patient a white board and colored dry erase markers so he could more easily communicate. Amber's cheerful acts of kindness made such a difference on his special day. She truly is a DAISY nurse!
