Had Amy not been there that day, I am not sure the family member would have had a shoulder to cry on and a warm hug waiting.
Amy and I were assisting on 8SW while there were new nursing students and a new nurse on the floor. While I was helping with the students, Amy was helping the new passport nurse as there was only one other nurse on the floor. The passport nurse had only very recently ended her orientation, and she had a patient who ended up having a rapid response. Amy assisted this passport nurse with the rapid response, showing her the process. Once everyone who needed to respond did, Amy stepped out of the room. She immediately noticed the patient's family member was in the hallway crying while others were walking right past her to get to the room. Amy was able to quickly, but respectfully, make her way past everyone and get to the family member to give her a much-needed hug. Amy had the provider speak with the patient's family and explain what was going on and they were able to come up with a plan for treatment. The family member needed support during the conversation with the doctor and Amy was there to provide it. Had Amy not been there that day, I am not sure the family member would have had a shoulder to cry on and a warm hug waiting.
