She understands that listening is a big part of communication. She takes as much time to listen and respond as she does to talk. She is empathetic in her communication, but at the same time, she is firm and direct.
Ana graduated from Georgia Perimeter College in 2011 with her Associate's Degree in Registered Nursing in May of 2011. Soon after, she began her professional nursing career as a resident on 8 North Surgical Trauma. Ana adapted quickly to her new role and was soon recognized for her stellar critical thinking skills and patient advocacy. Ana assumed additional responsibilities as a preceptor and charge nurse, which offered her the opportunity to showcase her abilities to make clear and thoughtful leadership decisions and grow and support new nurses. Ana was promoted to the Night Shift Supervisor role under the direction of the manager, Lynn Thompson. When reflecting back on her tenure as the supervisor Lynn remembers Ana as being a strong leader, supportive of the manager and leadership initiatives. She reports that Ana was instrumental in growing the night shift staff though maintaining the delicate balance of holding her staff accountable while recognizing their strengths.
Ana continued to display a drive to grow as a leader within our organization and a willingness to take on new roles. Ana was once again promoted to the role of Service Coordinator of 4 South and led the efforts to open the new wing of that unit. She provided support in that role as that unit was converted to a COVID unit early in the pandemic period. Ana was soon promoted to manager of 8 South was she has continued to lead with clarity and drive.
Ana reports directly to her Operations Manager, Thu Nguyen, who had much to say about Ana’s leadership.
“As a leader, Ana significantly exceeds all expectations. She is a leader that motivates, inspires, and that others look up to. She has many strengths, and here are some, to name a few.
• Communication – She understands that listening is a big part of communication. She takes as much time to listen and respond as she does to talk. She is empathetic in her communication, but at the same time, she is firm and direct.
• Emotional intelligence – She senses when one of her staff members is having a bad day or feeling overwhelmed and intervenes appropriately. She is thoughtful and understanding. She also has an enhanced level of self-awareness and achieves this through daily self-reflection.
• Integrity – Ana is honest to a fault. She holds herself to very high standards, which only inspires others around her to do the same. Her work ethic is incredible. She does not like to leave for the day until she accomplishes what she has set out to do. She does not make false promises or take shortcuts. She always delivers.
• Accountability – Just as she holds herself accountable, she does so for her staff as well. Ana likes to grow her staff. She encourages her supervisors to become confident and competent leaders, to take charge and make decisions even when she isn’t there. This is evidenced by how smoothly the unit is run in her absence. She takes time to learn what their goals and aspirations are and supports them in the attainment of their goals.
Ana is active in many workgroups including the huddle board standardization and Unit Secretary patient experience boot camp. She is an active member of the DAISY Committee and recently transitioned to becoming the DAISY Committee Chair. Ana is a mentor, official and unofficial, to her peers. She advocates for not only patients, but also staff.
As a Director who takes a higher level view of the function of the Acute Care team in totality, Ana’s wins frequently bubble to the surface. Under Ana’s direction, her staff has achieved numerous accomplishments. Ana’s team members are frequently recognized for Good Catch Awards and one of her staff members received the high honor of the systems Best of the Best Good Catch award. A new nurse of her unit was recognized as the winner of the March of Dimes award in the Rising Star category for the state of Georgia. These things happen with frequency with her team members because she inspires them to greater success.
Ana’s unit was recently recognized for going 6 months and then, an entire year without having any HAPI’s on her unit – a remarkable accomplishment given the high acuity level and decompensation of her patient population. Ana has been instrumental in leading her team through the Disease Specific Certification process for Pneumonia and is set to welcome the Joint Commission surveyor for the inaugural visit this Friday. Ana recently noted an uptick in the occurrence of CAUTIs on her unit. Instead of adopting a wait and see attitude, Ana immediately partnered with members of her team to develop an aggressive plan of action to address the issue, and these initiatives are already being implemented within her department today. Ana also sees consistent results in improving her patient experience outcomes.
To sum it up, Ana is a leader that we should all strive to become. She doesn’t settle for good, only for the best, in herself and others. Her impact is significant, as evidenced by her many accomplishments and her continued efforts to become a better version of herself each and every day. Ana truly is a force for good, and I am so fortunate to have her on my team.
