April would say that it is just part of her job to manage the first hours of bonding with her patients and their new little ones. The complications of today's society have added a layer of complexity to this experience. April was recognized by a mom who is a recovering addict. The mom starts by saying that "this story is not the easiest one for me to share". She describes how both she and her husband watched as their daughter started to exhibit signs of withdrawal. Both of them struggled with the decision to allow the baby to receive a dose of morphine to help minimize the effects of the withdrawal. Due to a past bad experience at another hospital, both parents were fearful of this decision.
April was able to connect with this family. The mom stated that "she spent a long time with us and answered all of our questions and made us feel at ease. She actively listened to both of our points of view, passing no judgment as we struggled with the decision to medicate our daughter". April stayed with this family throughout the night while the meds were administered and the effects of the drug began to take effect. The parents concluded that they "did not think that April realized the effect she had on each of our lives, but it is something that they thank God for and will never forget."
April demonstrates the values of dignity and respect of those entrusted to her care. April took the time to put all judgment aside and provide an excellent example of the true qualities of a DAISY Nurse.
