We were experiencing a very dark day. M's abdominal pain was off the charts. His BP was 210/106 with an incredible headache to which he could not stand sound, light or movement. With nothing in his stomach, a constant retching aggravated his pain. He couldn't keep anything down and we sat in the silent, dark room all day. I prayed for relief and some sign of healing. Then Ashley walked in for our 2nd night with her. She witnessed how well M was doing the night before (happy, witty and ready to go home). This night, the same patient lay in the bed, yet there was no comparison as he lay in the dark, barely conversing. Ashley brought in the light, as she took charge and had a plan. She worked diligently and systematically bringing in oxygen to help the excruciating headache, IV pain meds for his ever-painful abdomen and addressed his wacky BP. She explained patiently the "whys and whats" of her plan, told us what she was watching and said she would be there. Ashley was attentive to all the details of his care. She made Marc her mission to turn around in one of the scariest days of my life. You must be proud of such an intelligent RN as Ashley!
