Ashley Stalker exemplifies the Core Values of Caring Spirit, Excellence, and Integrity. My husband was admitted to the 3rd floor with pneumonia that was complicated with stage IV GI cancer that had spread to the liver and lungs. After a couple of weeks of intensive antibiotic therapy with no improvement, he decided to be placed on comfort care. When entering the room Ashley's priority was the patient and not the task. She would engage my husband and the entire room in conversation, taking the time to get to know the patient and family. Ashely would not only complete the task at hand but because of her interaction would be able to assess the physical condition of my husband and any changes from previously to try to address them. There were times when I would return to the room to see Ashley holding my husband's hand, providing comforting words or just a smile. During this time the small gestures are the biggest. Ashely would stop by the room, even if my husband was not her patient for the day or even if she was not working but happened to be in the hospital, to say hello and check-in. During those times if a small task, getting Kleenex or emptying the urinal, needed to be done she did not hesitate. Ashely always had a kind word and hugs for our family. Ashley became a part of our family during this journey. Ashley was mentoring a new hire RN at the same time. It was amazing to watch the interaction and teaching skills that she brought to the table. In the time that my husband was a patient, we were able to see the growth in this new hire RN, not only in her clinical skills but in her personal skills. This I attribute to Ashley. From our family, we experienced wonderful nursing care from all the staff, but Ashley and her trainee touched our hearts.
