A patient was scheduled for a surgival procedure that was the latest in a progression of procedures. The patient was in a great deal of pain and was unable to adequately take care of her own personal needs. She had come from a nursing home and would be returning there after her discharge from BASMC. This patient was in need of hygiene care and Betsy realized that it would be very difficult for either the nursing staff on the floor or at the nursing home to accomplish this post-op due to her condition and limitations. While waiting on additional supplies to arrive and with the patient under general anesthesia, Betsy bathed the patient and washed her hair. This was a perfect example of being a patient advocate and doing whatever it takes to allow the patient to receive the complete care she needed while maintaining her dignity and avoiding additional pain. By going above and beyond what is usually done in Surgery, Betsy personifies exemplary service, compassionate care and what it takes to be a truly professional nurse.
