Brett is a born educator who has a knack for engaging others in such a positive manner, they want to learn. Colleagues are inspired by him, and patients routinely request him. He is an absolute pleasure to manage.
Brett has been with the oncology unit since May 2018. He initially began as a PCT while attending nursing school. His transition from student to bedside clinician has been seamless. He is always the first to jump in and assist others, no matter the task. He has stepped into various unit initiatives like falls champion, unit council, and, most recently, education extender.
Additionally, he has taken on the role of mentor to new hires as well as preceptor to nursing students. When staff shared to other units, a sampling of manager feedback is as follows: I just wanted to give a shout-out to Brett S. He was recently staff shared to 3WW. I was so impressed with him and his interactions with his patients and the LPN students we had on the unit.
I just sat at the desk for a while and listened to him interact and teach the LPN students. He showed a true understanding of nursing and patient care as well a great deal of calm and patience when teaching. I wanted to make sure you knew (I am sure you do!) what a special caregiver he is and how it was a true honor having him on 3WW for the shift.
These are some of the same adjectives patients use to describe Brett when I complete daily rounds.
We recently had the honor to provide end-of-life care to a physician couple, one of whom was an oncologist. Both physicians were blown away not only by the high level of care Brett delivered but the patience, compassion, and empathy he provided to the patient and spouse. During a follow-up visit to the home, he again made reference to the incredible care provided by Brett during his 4 day stay on our unit.
To paraphrase his words... "he could take comfort leaving Abington and this world knowing Abington inpatient oncology unit has not missed a beat providing the highest level of care..."
I often tell Brett I wish I had 50 just like him however, if this were the case, there would be no need for me. I cannot think of a more deserving humble individual more worthy of this honor.
