We had the pleasure of having Brittany take care of our little L twice during our admission (our first night after surgery and our last day of discharge). Both of the days she cared for our little one she served as a patient and family advocate. The first thing she did that made us appreciate her was educating us right out of surgery. I am also a pediatric nurse, however, cardiology isn't my specialty, and my husband has no medical background. She made sure we understood every tube, monitor, and line our child was connected to as well as every medication that was given. The other big part she played as a patient advocate was when she helped us to get our medication covered through insurance. We spent 2 extra days in the hospital solely battling the insurance company to get medication coverage for my child, and when it finally went through the cost was still outrageous. As a nurse, I asked her if she knew of a way to get the medication switched to a pill that I could crush and if that would be any cheaper. Brittany worked with the unit pharmacist to see if she can make that happen. Sure enough, not only did it work, but the insurance covered the pill completely and we were discharged within an hour instead of waiting another day for the liquid to be delivered to our pharmacy. Because of her, we got to sleep in our own house a day sooner and were able to afford my child's much-needed medications.
