She held our hands, gave us hugs, and talked us through what we might be feeling or what might come up down the road.
We never imagined our family being put into the situation we were put in so quickly in January. Everything was a blur and seemed to be happening so quickly and our lives were spiraling out of control. Brook was there for it all. Our mom was placed into Hospice, and we were all shaken. We never thought we would get to that point. Brook never wavered, she stepped up and was there for every moment that we needed even those moments we may not have known we needed. She would sit and talk with us and just visit when we needed someone to talk to or just to listen to us ramble.
Mom was there for a few weeks, and during that time, we became really close with Brook. We found ourselves hoping that Brook would be there every day in case something happened. She was there when Mom passed away. She held our hands, gave us hugs, and talked us through what we might be feeling or what might come up down the road.
She made us feel like family and that we were home even though we weren’t. She offered reassurances when we weren’t sure which way was up and which way was down. She explained everything that was going on with Mom and what they were doing while taking care of Mom. She listened so well and never once made it seem like we were a burden to her. She answered all of our questions and explained when we didn’t quite understand. She found out test results for us even though they didn’t matter to anyone at the point; they mattered to us and would help us understand where we came from and how we got here. Brook always showed compassion and respect.
She let us lean on her in our most vulnerable moments and ones that we didn’t think could happen to us so quickly. Brook left a lasting impression on all of our family but my kids especially. My 3 boys were thrown into a scary time in their lives where we were having to introduce the idea of death to them. Brook was amazing at helping them understand and to give us materials and such to aid in their understanding. They refer to her as the Popsicle nurse!
I cannot express how much we are blessed to have had Brook come into our lives during the most heartbreaking time. We will forever be grateful and cannot speak kind words enough on behalf of Brook and for Hospice.
