Chanka went above and beyond to ensure that a patient with a PICC line had it removed as ordered by the doctor. Numerous attempts made by other nurses to locate patient, to be able to do so, with no results. Chanka ensured that there was ample communication between him and the office concerning this patient. Finally, Chanka arrived at the patient's address, which was a motel, with no answer after repeated knocks. Chanka took it one step further and called the nonÂÂemergency police line and informed them of the reason why it was imperative that he be able to see the patient.
The police officer was given demographics by Chanka after explaining the situation, and the police were able to reach the patient's emergency contact, who was then instructed by the police that the office would be arriving at 8:15 PM along with the nurse, Chanka. The officer arrived and once again Chanka was able to explain the situation to the patient and the patient's girlfriend, on the need to remove the PICC line.
Chanka was able to remove the PICC line without incidence, he gave clear instructions to the patient about how he was securing the dressing, what signs and symptoms to look for once line is removed and how to appropriately monitor the arm where the PICC line was, especially within the next 24 hours. Including any pain or discharge; as well as any tingling sensations in the PICC line are. If there are any issues, the patient is to return to the emergency room as soon as possible.
Chanka made sure that the patient was able to demonstrate and recite what to look for by having the patient repeat the instructions he had given to the patient. Chanka then proceeded with the rest of the visit and informed that he was discharged from home care. Chanka is a fantastic nurse who was very patient and diligent about seeing this patient and using his resources to ensure that he was safe, and the patient was safe from any continued issues related to his PICC line.
Chanka is a great representation of what BayCare is about, his caring nature, ability to get the job done and continue to have a smile on his face is what we all strive to be, even on rough days. Chanka is a fantastic nurse who goes above and beyond for patients, no matter how long it takes.
