I am nominating Justin Stewart of 6 North IICU for the DAISY Award on behalf of my friend, who passed away in the IICU at Lancaster General Hospital on October 5, 2014. The week before her passing, she expressed to me that when she went home she was going to nominate Justin for the DAISY Award, but sadly, she was unable to do so. I am proud to be able to do this one last important thing for her.
My friend explained to me that as a nurse herself, and an almost perpetual patient over the last 30 years, she had seen and been cared for by more nurses than she could count. There were a handful of nurses that stood out for their care and compassion. She spent many weeks and sometimes months at a time in these caring facilities, but one nurse stood out heads above the others ---Justin Stewart. She trusted him fully. He exemplified everything that a nurse should be: caring, compassionate, truth teller, and positive attitude. He treated her with respect even though she could be a tough patient.
One day Justin needed to leave the floor for a meeting. Before leaving he instructed all other nurses to keep a close watch on her as she had a difficult time breathing and explained what they should do. Sorry to say no one was available when she pressed her call button. Her breathing apparatus fell off while she was sleeping and she was too weak to call out. It took quite a while until someone noticed. When Justin returned, he contacted those in charge and set up a loud bell that she could ring if another emergency arose.
Justin was also in contact with my friend's doctors at another hospital so that he could better care for her.
My friend was a caring compassionate person and she treated everyone as a friend. She would do whatever she could for all those who needed help. When it comes to nursing, she considered Justin as a very special friend and felt that he was a special role model for all nurses and those who wish to become nurses.
Please honor my friend's last request and give Justin the honor that he most certainly deserves.
