I consider Christy to be one of my Nurse Moms or one of the nurses who has had such a powerful impact on my trajectory as a nurse and I know that I am not alone in this belief, as such Christy has positively impacted the lives of countless patients either directly or indirectly through her investment in self-growth and the growth of other nurses.
The SICU had a patient who sustained a traumatic brain injury and underwent multiple unexpected brain surgeries and his wife was 9 months pregnant at the time. As the patient was being rushed off for emergent brain surgery due to an unexpected decline, his wife's water broke. Christy took it upon herself to take this patient's wife in a wheelchair to OB Screening. The SICU patient's wife was admitted to Mom/Baby in labor and not long after, he emerged from the OR status post craniectomy. Christy moved mountains, shuffled patients and staff around very appropriately and coordinated care thought out the hospital to bring the SICU patient, with a SICU nurse, to Labor and Delivery mere hours after his brain surgery so that he could be with his wife as she delivered their baby.
Everyone from neurosurgery to L&D nurses, midwives, and the ancillary staff was instrumental in making this happen, but Christy was the driver behind the entire process. As a result, the patient was able to be with his wife throughout her labor, his wife was able to be with her husband and each had their worries completely minimized as they were with one another in their unique situations. The SICU patient was able to cut his son's cord when he was born.
