Suffice it to say that the medical care in the Critical Care Unit is complicated. Very.
So this praise is especially noteworthy: "I am writing to tell you about the superb care my father received while in your unit. I would like to especially single out the care given by registered nurse Corey Strahm," writes the son of a patient.
"Corey exhibited a level of competence, compassion and confidence that is beyond that which I have witnessed in my 15+ years as a family physician. His interactions with the physician consultants involved in my dad's care showed his knowledge base and understanding of a very complicated situation. He remained an advocate for my father and was instrumental in helping coordinate his care."
Helping families navigate the complex world of Critical Care is important to Strahm of Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. "I'm glad I could give the family some comfort," says Strahm, who earned the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
In addition to Strahm and the doctors, "The entire nursing and support staff have been exemplary in their care," the patient's son writes.
As CCU staff gathered for Strahm's surprise award ceremony complete with an appearance from his wife, Family Medicine nurse practitioner Sarah Strahm the line from the DAISY presentation proved true: "Nursing is a team sport."
