Crystal was so sweet and compassionate to this patient and her family. It honestly reminded me of why I became a nurse.
Crystal was taking care of a patient that had been transferred from OPS. Her surgery was delayed, and her discharge was much later than expected. The patient had her 85 y/o grandmother as her visitor and ride home. Crystal overheard the patient’s grandmother say she was hungry and had not eaten all day since arriving at the hospital. Crystal went to the cafeteria and got the patient and her grandmother food. The grandmother was in tears and told Crystal that she had been warned about not eating because she was diabetic. She couldn’t stop thanking her. At the time of discharge, we realized the grandmother’s car was parked out front. She said that’s where she was told to park it by OPS, but now the front doors were locked. We called security and explained the situation and they kindly unlocked the front doors for us. Upon walking out, the grandmother became a little unsteady on her feet. Crystal had her hold onto her for support the entire way down. When we arrived at the front, Crystal realized it was raining. She offered to pull the car around. Crystal pulled the car to the front doors so that the grandmother would not have to be out in the cold and rain or would she be at an increased risk for fall. She placed the grandmother in the car and ensured she was safe to drive home in the dark. Crystal was so sweet and compassionate to this patient and her family. It honestly reminded me of why I became a nurse. It really touched my heart, and I couldn’t have been more proud of anyone. Crystal is a true DAISY Nurse. The patient and family were telling us how much they loved us and how great to them we were. They asked for names before pulling off. Crystal is a true example of what a nurse should be.
