My nurse, Dana, has been a wonderful nurse during the two plus weeks I have been in Christiana Care. She has always shown the greatest, most genuine care while I have been here. I have been suffering from constant, intense pain.
I came to the hospital, after suffering very bad headaches for a month, and was diagnosed with a subdermal hematoma that required surgery. After surgery, I was moved to 2C. However, after surgery, I developed blood clots in both legs and continued to suffer from the same type of headaches that brought me to the ER initially.
To say the least, it was very frustrating to continue to suffer from all this pain. Just trying to walk from my bed to the bathroom and back was excruciating. Dana was, however, always there to keep an eye on me and escort me back and forth. In addition, she did a wonderful job with anticipating my needs and trying to address them before they became a problem. Also, when I was dealing with a great deal of pain, but was not able to have pain meds at that time, she thought ahead and provided me with an ice pack and a heat pack for the different problems I was having. She was able to make things like that work and went a great length to show that she didn't simply rely on narcotic pain meds, but also used simple, easy home remedies to try to bring some relief to a patient that was getting none.
She has also showed that she will do whatever she can to help me get in touch with a physician when necessary, no matter the issue. She helped me to get relief from what felt like a sinus infection coming on while on the floor. She made sure the doctor was made aware of the issue and also helped to remind me to bring it up to him. Also, my parents were here the other day, and Dana did a wonderful job explaining some issues to them that I wasn't getting across. She did a terrific job helping a couple of frightened 70 plus year olds get some answers to their questions.
Dana has just done a terrific, all around job dealing with a patient, their family, physicians, all while staying up to date with her other patients. She has made this stay much better, and more tolerable because of her professionalism and compassion.
