He stood out to me compared to the other nurses because of his professionalism and how he continued to want to help this individual and provide the best care possible.
I recently witnessed Dan providing compassionate care to a patient, above and beyond what most would consider to be acceptable levels of care. I was impressed, especially with the follow-through. This particular patient encounter was seen by me because the patient became a security issue. Dan was very positive and tolerant of this individual. The patient was very intoxicated, and Dan had to continuously de-escalate the patient in small ways. Since Dan handled each of those little things in the right way, he kept the intoxicated individual in a manageable state of cooperation. I noticed that he would also need help adjusting this intoxicated patient’s arms and legs many times so that this individual would not injure himself more on the railings of the bed. Each time, Dan would do it in a gentle and de-escalating way. The patient would also keep trying to pull at his neck brace, and Dan would have to repeatedly explain why he had it on and that we couldn’t take it off. Sometimes, this patient was kind, and other times, just the opposite. I also witnessed that the patient was not allowing another nurse to take blood, so Dan came back into the room to take the blood. He was once again happy and positive. He was able to get the blood sample without a problem. He stood out to me compared to the other nurses because of his professionalism and how he continued to want to help this individual and provide the best care possible. The “follow through” I am referring to was Dan walking with Security to take this individual home (right down the road) to ensure he didn’t get hit by a car or fall and hit his head on the curb. This individual was very intoxicated even after being cleared by the doctor hours later. This display of care for a patient in need was outstanding. I feel Dan should be recognized for his kindness and compassion.
