We've spent over 800 days in four different hospitals, and I feel we have a good idea of a nurse who excels at the job. Reflecting on our journey and the characteristics of a great nurse, I was thinking of all the different phases that we have been through.
Elizabeth has been our daughter B's nurse when she was a month-old baby and a nine-year-old girl and every age in between. She has been our nurse when we were novices in the cancer world and when we became grizzled vets. She has been our nurse through happy times and difficult times.
In every age and every phase, Elizabeth has been exactly who we need. She's provided normalcy to center our lives when we've needed it. She's provided a feeling of protection when we've needed someone to have our backs. Elizabeth's versatility is a key trait to being a great nurse.
Pediatric cancer is a great equalizer in that it can affect all walks of life and children of all ages. Elizabeth has a wonderful ability to adapt her care to match the patient and family. She has made a huge impact on our lives.
