While working as the Assistant Nurse Manager in the surgery/ Specialty clinic, Emily was also covering for our OBGYN department and assisting with surgical coordination for our female veteran population. Emily noticed in a veteran's chart that although the patient had been scheduled for a major operation (robotic hysterectomy). The provider has noticed that there was additional work up to be completed for safety reasons and that the surgery needed to be canceled and postponed to a later date. Emily called the veteran to discuss this plan and to set up a meeting for the veteran with the OBGYN provider. Once the veteran was notified that her surgery needed to be postponed, the veteran became emotional, extremely upset, and began to express suicidal ideation. Emily quickly recognized these concerning statements and alerted her officemate to the situation while she continued to talk with the patient over the phone. Her office mate was able to utilize the Suicide Hotline web portal while Emily stayed on the phone with the patient. Emily was so kind, thoughtful, and caring to the veteran throughout the call, despite the highly stressful situation. Emily demonstrated advocacy to the veteran and was able to build trust and rapport despite being over the phone. Emily was able to talk to the veteran about mental health services and was able to get the veteran to discuss her thoughts of self-harm with the veteran crisis team. Emily demonstrated the highest form of dignity and respect for this veteran during her time of need, ensuring that the veteran's safety was the priority. Throughout that concerning afternoon, Emily showed grace and excellence, and in the weeks following, the veteran thanked Emily for her diligence. Emily's empathy and swift, caring dedication exemplifies our mission to serve our veterans and she is an incredible nurse and leader.
