She made us smile and laugh when we needed it, hugged us, and let us cry when we needed that, too. She was a blessing, and I can't imagine going through this life-changing event without her.
My 77-year-old father was admitted after a fall and was moved out of the trauma unit once he was stable and no longer critical. We met Emily as soon as we arrived on the 3rd floor. Dad took a turn for the worse that afternoon and we, as a family, decided to pursue comfort measures only. The palliative NP came and discussed his care with us. She told us that because he would be considered a hospice patient, that he may need to be moved to the hospice floor. We shared with Emily what we were told, and we expressed our hopes to not have to move him again. Without us even asking, Emily went to her nurse manager and asked for our family to be kept on the same floor so she could provide his end-of-life care. We were then contacted by the nurse manager and palliative care and shared that hope with them as well. Thankfully, they complied, and we were able to stay with Emily.
She came to Dad's room every 15 minutes and made sure he had his medications and was comfortable. She talked to him and told him what she was doing each time she came in, even though he was unresponsive. She was there right up to his very last breath. Emily had other patients that she was caring for that day, and she could have told her manager that his care would take too much of her time, but she went above and beyond for him and for us. She was so kind, gentle, and thoughtful. Emily didn't just care for Dad. She checked on us throughout the day. She made us smile and laugh when we needed it, hugged us, and let us cry when we needed that, too. She was a blessing, and I can't imagine going through this life-changing event without her. She was a perfect fit for our family: smart, serious, tender, spunky, quick-witted, and a little nutty, all rolled into one!
My heart goes out to anyone who has to walk the same road that we walked on in May 2024, but if they are walking that road with Emily McDaniel at their side, they will get through it, no matter the outcome. My dad's passing was made a little easier with her by our side and we will never be able to repay that kindness and care.
