I am humbled by Eugene’s knowledge and generosity of spirit. I consider him a fearless advocate for his patients and a trailblazer for safe pain management.
Ten years ago I had the pleasure of working with Eugene at NYU Langone Medical Center and to now have him on staff as our pain management specialist speaks to the high standards that Northwell Health requires of its nursing staff. And I will say, it didn't take long for our nurses to discover what a wealth of knowledge Eugene brings to both our patients and staff.
It is not unusual to find Eugene speaking to one of the Unit nurses about pain management, his rationale for choosing particular medications, and their potential side effects and/or contraindications. Let me put it this way: When Eugene speaks, staff stops to listen. The last impromptu discussion I participated in had 3-4 RNs and several PCAs gathered around listening intently to the information being offered. He fielded our questions and honored differing points of view. Most importantly, he challenges staff to consider new ways to approach pain management while at the same time respecting their expertise and opinions as fellow nurses.
I describe Eugene as dedicated to keeping patients as comfortable as possible while titrating opioids to the lowest dose possible to maintain pain relief. In addition, he incorporates non-opioids that also manage pain well without the risk of addiction. Patients have told me they are amazed at how much better they feel once he meets with them, listens to their concerns, and adjusts their medications as needed.
I've worked side-by-side with Eugene and have witnessed his compassion, patience, and keen listening skills while tending to patients and family members. His calm demeanor is reassuring and his sense of humor builds a sense of ease and connection with patients. Dedicated and caring to a fault, it is not unusual for Eugene to follow-up on patients on his days off, even coming in to take care of a patient in uncontrollable pain.
