Eva listened attentively and showed compassion and reverence for the patient
Eva Rubio was nominated for taking the time to help a nurse on another unit with an uncommon procedure after her own shift had ended.
A patient on 3-West required therapeutic phlebotomy – also known as a manual red blood cell exchange. This procedure is not commonly performed in inpatient care areas, and the nurse assigned to the patient had never performed it before. The nurse was nervous about performing the procedure on her own and asked if someone would be able to support her.
In addition to her role as Practice Coordinator on 2-West, Eva also oversees care in Outpatient Infusion, where therapeutic phlebotomies are commonly performed. Eva had already completed a busy day, working through patient care concerns and meeting with Case Managers and Doctors to complete a tough case, but when the call for help came in, Eva was the only one with the skills to perform the procedure. So, she stayed past the end of her regular shift and went upstairs to help the nurse with the procedure.
Despite challenges with venous access due to the patient’s poor skin and vein conditions, Eva and the nurse persevered and successfully completed the exchange.
“Eva listened attentively and showed compassion and reverence for the patient,” a colleague on 3-West says. “She also provided mentorship to the bedside nurse who was very anxious about taking care of the patient during and after the procedure.”
Throughout the procedure, Eva’s phone was ringing and sounding with text alerts. After everything was finished, she finally took a moment to check her phone and saw that her children had been trying to reach her. It was just after 10 p.m. – three hours after her regular shift should have ended.
Eva’s children were anxiously waiting for her to come home because they had prepared a little surprise for her…It was her birthday!
“Her children had set the dinner table beautifully with flowers and cake,” says Laura De Vera, 2-West Nurse Manager. “Eva felt sorry for being so late to their surprise, but she also felt rewarded by the sacrifice she had made for the love of nursing.”
Thank you, Eva, for your selflessness and incredible compassion for our patients. We are truly blessed to have you on Team Saint Agnes!
