He joyfully pushed me in a wheelchair across the hospital and to the first-floor park, where he stayed with me and my family for over an hour. Again, I have no words to describe what this meant to me and how it filled my heart and soul with LOVE and JOY!
I was transferred from the ER to the 5th floor. Having fought cancer for 9 and a half years, I wasn’t the nicest of patients or even human being that day. My nurse Glen immediately took “charge” of the situation assuring me that everything would get better. As hard as it was to believe that this nurse was going to “make things better”, just his demeanor gave me hope and helped relieve my stress. During the following two shifts with Glen, I received bad news; however, Glen held true to his word and made this situation better. He was there every time I had an “episode,” and like magic, specialists would arrive within minutes of Glen’s request.
When I had an anxiety attack over a scan I didn’t want to take, Glen appeared and calmed me down, insisted it would all be okay, and even held my hand until transportation arrived and planned for another nurse to escort me.
When I got the news of my short life expectancy, Glen was there again to assist me in any way he could. Again, his calm and in-charge demeanor and insistence that he’d do everything he could to make things better calmed me down and helped in so many ways that I don’t have words.
When I requested to go downstairs to see my 2-year-old granddaughter play at the hospital park, Glen arranged for a nurse to cover him and took me and the IV machine to see her. He joyfully pushed me in a wheelchair across the hospital and to the first-floor park, where he stayed with me and my family for over an hour. Again, I have no words to describe what this meant to me and how it filled my heart and soul with LOVE and JOY!
Glen is truly a prime example of everything a real nurse should or could be. My family and I will always be grateful in my final days for Glen being there for us.
Note: This is Glen's 2nd DAISY Award!
