All of my nurses were great. However, there was an interaction that put Gloria Stickel over the top for me, and it wasn't even what she did for me, but for my roommate.
Bed A was a minimally responsive patient who required a great deal of care. Many times, a patient like this is casually pushed and pulled to accomplish care on a busy unit. If they are spoken to at all, it is in a loud, impatient manner; not here at SOMC! Gloria's interaction particularly touched my heart. Soft, kind, respectful, asking for permission before providing care. See, I know about these things. I was a nurse. I am a nurse, forever. This is the kind of nurse I always tried to be. Always aware that you don't know your patient's life, their story, their trials, and tribulations. Mindful that a person with feelings lies before you, not just a task on your endless list for the shift. Kindness to bed A radiated through the curtain all the way over to bed B and brought me to tears. Thank you to Gloria for that special moment.
