This gentleman called to say he had received our discharge letter and wanted to discuss it with me. He verbalized that when he was in the hospital both of his hearing aid batteries went dead, and he was quite embarrassed because it was very difficult to communicate with the nursing and physician staff. He said he called down to our pharmacy to learn that they did have batteries and they were $10 per pack. He said that he had no money as he had sent his wallet home with his daughter. A short time later Hayley brought in a pack of batteries and laid them on his table when he told her that he didn't have any money, she said she had found them. He said he knew she had not just found them but thanked her. When she discharged him the next day, he shoved a $20 bill in her pocket and thanked her. He then received the discharge letter in the mail, and in it, a $10 bill with a note, that the batteries were only $10. He wanted us to know how appreciative he was of her, and her actions. He also thanked me for having such great caring staff. I reached out to Hayley, and as her usual demeanor she said it was not that big of a deal, but wow did it make a huge difference in their communication, especially at discharge. She said she did not realize until she got home that he has given her $20, instead of $10.
