Heather has always been someone I look up to and admire. She has such a kind and gentle demeanor. She brings peace and comfort to patients and patients’ family members when they are experiencing rough times. I want to share a story that highlights how Heather connects and loves her patients.

I was having a busy day as charge on a COVID unit one weekend. I usually work along with Heather on MICU. She came up to check on me and see if I needed anything. I had just admitted a patient and she offered to help get him settled in. She immediately connected to him as she does with most people. They talked about everything including how all his children’s names start with “R” including the dog and cat. She made sure he was settled and followed up with him and his care during the rest of his stay.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ahead, he ended up on our home unit. He was not progressing towards getting better and just the opposite. Heather and I charged on the day he passed. She sat next to him and held his hand at a time when his family wasn’t available. When his family arrived, the nurse asked if we would be willing to go into the room and talk with his sons. These boys were unable to see him for the past month. As we went in with tears in our eyes, Heather was able to name each of their names and tell the boys how much their dad loved and talked about them. She gave them a glimpse of closure and support that they needed.

Heather’s compassion towards people is such a treasure and joy to witness and be around. She brings light to our profession and illustrates how to treat and serve people. I am honored to work beside her.
