Ida explained to my partner and me where I was and what was needed for my safe and quick recovery. Her patient, thorough, friendly, and professional bedside manner was reassuring after such an important surgery.
I have experienced back pain for over 2 years with little relief from pain medication. Finally, I was scheduled for a laminectomy. After the surgery and time in the recovery room, I was moved to the Central Hospital Inpatient Services (CHIPS) area of the Kaiser Permanente Capitol Hill Medical Center.
My nurse, Irasema Cedillo (Ida) explained to my partner and me where I was and what was needed for my safe and quick recovery. Her patient, thorough, friendly, and professional bedside manner was reassuring after such an important surgery. She introduced the PAs and other support staff who would provide my care during her shift. She did her best to manage the pain I felt.
After a few hours, she assisted me with my first painful walk to the bathroom. When she returned me to my bed, she made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed within reach. Every hour or so she checked on me to make sure I was comfortable and answered all my questions. She arranged for a recliner chair to be brought into the room so my partner could stay overnight in my room.
At shift change, she introduced us to the next care team. When she returned the next morning she checked on me, answered all my questions, and told me the plan for the day; a doctor visit, a physical therapy visit, the removal of the drain and IV, and a discharge procedure. Her calm, friendly yet professional approach was comforting at a time when I was in pain and scared. When I expressed concern about my lack of ability to move without pain she reassured me it was normal after a laminectomy and told me I was being “too hard” on myself. Her calm and reassuring words calmed me down.
As she prepared for my discharge she checked my bandages, provided home health care supplies, checked my medications, and prepared me for a 1-hour car ride to my home. My partner and I really appreciated the personal, friendly, and professional care provided by all the CHIPS staff, and in particular, the wonderful care provided by Ida. We continue to be amazed and thrilled by the Kaiser Permanente staff!
