She identified that the patient was having difficulty with comprehension and trust in an environment that was unfamiliar to him.
Irma went beyond regular nursing care for a very distressed patient who had recently been diagnosed with dementia. He was having difficulty getting through his scheduled clinic appointment and was being a bit combative and uncooperative with his daughter. He wandered off from the clinic and was near “code silver.” She quickly found him outside of our clinic and escorted him back to his exam room. She identified that the patient was having difficulty with comprehension and trust in an environment that was unfamiliar to him. She immediately established a connection with the patient and gained his trust. He actually said, “The only person I trust is nurse X.” She accompanied him to his clinic appointment and accompanied him to Radiology for an ultrasound. She did not leave his side. Even beyond that, she escorted him and his daughter all the way back to their vehicle in the garage to ensure that he felt safe and comfortable. Her compassion and understanding greatly impacted this patient’s experience and allowed the patient to receive the care that he needed.
