One of Janelle's patients was a 28 year-old woman who came in with abdominal pain. She had a colonoscopy and long story short the surgeon came in that day to tell this young wife and mother of two (2 and 4 years old) that she had cancer with probable metastasis. Janelle sat with her and had many "caring moments." She later stated, "She is just in shock. I told her to just go home and love on those babies."
In the middle of all this, one of Janelle's other patients, assigned earlier from the ED, came to the unit. The staff was having difficulty getting this patient to respond. Rapid Response was called and it ended up being a psych issue, but Janelle was kind, compassionate, and handled it all as a true role model to the nursing profession.
