Janet was assigned to a 4-year-old girl who was brought in by the ambulance, along with her mom inside the ambulance. The patient was brought emergently to UCLA ED due to sudden intractable seizure activities. She was scheduled to be discharged home a couple days later. It was noted by Janet early morning that the patient did not have a car seat nor the mother had any money to buy it. Understanding their situation, Janet immediately contacted the Social Worker for assistance, but unfortunately, she was informed that there was no funding to support the request.
Janet then took the initiative to go to Target and purchased a car seat so that the patient was able to be discharged successfully without any delay. In talking to Janet, it was noted that her intention to purchase a car seat was to ensure the girl could be not only be discharged home safely but also for the mother to feel supported without being worried. Janet also stated that she thought about the next patient who needed to be admitted to Peds for the care as we were experiencing high census in the unit. When I asked Janet if I could help chip in some money, she replied "it is ok, just pay it forward" as she did not expect any recognition, reward or return of any sort from anyone.
Later that day, Janet received a bouquet of flower and a Thank You card from the mother. The card read:
"Dear Janet,
Thank you for going beyond your responsibility and ensuring my daughter and I made it home safely. People like you make this world a better place. May God bless you always."
This is a true testament to lending hands when someone is in need and not asking for any return. A true exemplar of "Healing humankind, one patient at a time." This nomination is to honor Janet's humility and acts of kindness, especially as they align with the philosophy and values of the DAISY Foundation.
