I was admitted to Medical City with a bad wound infection after reconstruction surgery following a double mastectomy, IV antibiotics and 1 debridement. Jessica was in my room visiting. She was not my nurse that day but was my nurse for the first 3 days of my stay. She noticed that my left leg was swollen. She suggested that I put the foot of my chair up. She notified my nurse who notified my doctor. A Doppler sonogram found I had a blood clot that stretched from my groin to my knee with one section just floating free. Doctors put in a mesh filter that afternoon.
Dr. D, my surgeon who put me in the hospital, told me the next day that nurse Jessica most likely saved my life. That piece that was just floating free could easily have made its way to my lungs causing a pulmonary embolism! I had no history of anything like this. I was on blood thinners for months as I had a mediport for my chemo.
Because Nurse Jessica noticed some swelling in one leg, I have a new second chance at life. Thank you, Jessica!
