Jessica was caring and compassionate. She acknowledged my being a nurse and employee while still understanding that I, as a patient, needed to hear and understand my own care.
Jessica was my nurse today in cath lab recovery. I have been an employee here since 2005 and know many of the staff as well as physicians. It has been my past experience that when I am a patient – I am “assumed” to know or just expected to know things about my care. Jessica did not treat me as a past co-worker or friend today – as many did. She treated me as a patient. She took the time to explain my device (loop recorder) to me – she explained how/when my device checks would be – and she very thoroughly went through all of my discharge instructions with me and did not just assume I knew what to do. Being a patient on the other side of healthcare after being a nurse here for so many years is a very scary thing – we know too much! But I can say that today, Jessica was caring and compassionate. She acknowledged my being a nurse and employee while still understanding that I, as a patient, needed to hear and understand my own care. We need more nurses to be as caring and compassionate as Jessica was to me today. Her actions stood out among the crowd – as I received many 'what are you doing? Why are you here?’ etc. comments. Jessica acknowledged me – but quickly focused on my care and the procedure I had. Her actions assured me – I was in her capable hands. Thank you, Jessica!
