Jinsook Kim, RN and Chang Paik, RN have always made a great team. As sisters they work together, providing excellent care for the Postpartum patients at the Ontario Medical Center, and one eventful day they worked together as an incredible team to save a man's life.
Jinsook and Chang are avid badminton players and play at a club in Anaheim at least once a week. One day Jinsook noticed that one of her fellow teammates was lying on his side, on a bench and not looking well. She went to check on him and found him non-responsive and blue. Jinsook quickly took charge of the situation; she gently rolled the gentleman to the floor while asking a bystander to call 911 and to find her sister Chang, who was also at the club. Jinsook then quickly assessed the gentleman and found he had no pulse and was not breathing. I was so scared,' Jinsook stated. I've never performed CPR on a real person before, only a mannequin.' Jinsook and Chang did not let fear stop them. Chang arrived quickly and immediately performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while Jinsook began chest compressions. By the time the paramedics arrived the gentleman's color was improving and he was breathing on his own.
Ten days later Chang was back at the badminton club when the gentleman walked in. Upon seeing Chang he broke into tears and ran to hug her. The gentleman shared with Chang that he had indeed suffered a heart attack and was treated at UCIrvine Medical Center where they placed a stent in one of the arteries in his heart. The gentleman and his family credit Chang and Jinsook for saving this man's life.
