Johnny was a calming force and made my wife’s transition easier for all of us.
The nurse who worked with us that night was Johnny. Johnny was one of the kindest and most professional nurses I have ever met. He was very sympathetic to our situation and did everything possible to help us through this most difficult time. Only hours earlier, we were expecting an outcome where my wife would beat cancer and return to a full life within a year. Now she was dying, and none of us were prepared emotionally for that. Johnny, however, was a calming force and made my wife’s transition easier for all of us. When the priest arrived and gave my wife the Last Rites, Johnny prayed with us. Johnny will never know how much that meant to us! When we reached the very end at about 11:15 pm, Johnny closed the blinds, turned off the monitor in the room, and left us to say our goodbyes as she passed to eternity. When the end came, he came back into the room, gave us condolences, and in a caring, pastoral way, told me the procedures for the funeral home. Sentara has always had wonderful staff with great, caring nurses. However, Johnny was head and shoulders above even the best. His kindness will always remain with us all. Sentara is privileged to have him on the Leigh Team.
