R's mom told her the day before her passing that her nurse and she laughed over the story and how she liked how her nurse (Judi) asked about her piercing.
R called our unit to say "thank you" to her mom's nurse, Judi. R's mom passed away 2 weeks ago and R was so thankful and relieved to know that her mom did not pass away alone, that Judi was in fact holding her hand at the time of death. R's sweet mom had a nose piercing, so Judi and R's mom discussed the story of her nose piercing. R's mom told her the day before her passing that her nurse and she laughed over the story and how she liked how her nurse asked about her piercing. Judi was devastated when her patient passed away, asking all the right questions that every nurse does in that situation. Judi notified R early that morning of her mom's passing and offered her time with her mom to say her goodbyes as it happened quickly. R was distraught and didn't feel she could drive to see her mom. Judi phoned R again later that morning when her shift ended to make sure that R was okay. Judi is a recent New Grad RN who we have watched blossom in her early nursing career, but she went above and beyond her call of duty with her patient's loved one. R was so grateful that Judi was with her mom that morning and that they had bonded over her mom's nose piercing (>90 yrs. old). R said she finally felt compelled to thank Judi for these things. As I told Judi of our phone call and R's forever thankfulness, Judi's eyes welled up with tears. These are the profound moments of our nursing careers that shape us as nurses and the beautiful, simple gifts we can offer to others.
